Independent candidate Angela Villella has won the by-election in Darebin's North West Ward, succeeding late councillor Gaetano Greco.

The by-election was called after Greco, a longtime independent councillor in Darebin, died in hospital following an illness in April.

In a field of nine candidate, Villella has won with 57.6% of the two-candidate-preferred vote, according to figures obtained by 6 News. In second place is Victorian Socialists candidate Cat Rose with 42.3%, one of the best post-preferences figures for a Victorian Socialists candidate in the party's history.

Results obtained by 6 News yesterday showed Villella with a clear primary vote lead of 27.4%, compared to Labor candidate Daniel Scoullar at 17.6% and Rose at 14.5%.
