Sylvia Klonaris has announced her candidacy for Lord Mayor of Darwin at next month's local government elections.

Klonaris, an independent who currently serves as one of three councillors for Waters Ward, announced this morning that she will run for the city's top job alongside a re-election campaign for Waters.

"At 55 years old, and born and raised in Darwin, I know the heart of this city and the strength of our community. Over the past four years, I’ve proudly served as your independent voice, advocating for improved infrastructure, safety, accessibility, and greater inclusion across our municipality," she said on Facebook.

"Darwin deserves leadership that listens, acts, and stands up for every voice in our city. I'm committed to building a council that puts community first, leads with integrity, prioritises safety, connection, sustainability, and progress."

Incumbent lord mayor Kon Vatskalis has already confirmed he'll be running for a third term, but says it will be his last. He easily won re-election in 2021 with 57% of first preferences, while Klonaris was the first-placed candidate in Waters with 26.9% of first preferences.
